5 Shocking Realities About Retail Investors and Private Credit Access

admin March 12, 2025

The financial landscape is changing, yet barriers still hinder retail investors from accessing alternative investments like private credit. Industry advocates, such as Joanna Gallegos from BondBloxx, push for increased access, but it’s essential to evaluate whether these options genuinely benefit average investors. The so-called democratization of investment often appears more as a marketing tactic than a real opportunity for wealth generation.

Gallegos promotes the BondBloxx Private Credit CLO ETF (PCMM), claiming it opens private credit to retail investors. This narrative suggests a powerful financial tool, yet it conceals high fees and sluggish returns common in private credit. The question remains: do average investors have the expertise to determine if such exposure will enhance their portfolios or burden them with costs?

Since its launch three months ago, the BondBloxx ETF has only gained 1%, raising doubts about its viability as an alternative investment. Amid market volatility, its stagnant performance challenges the notion that it can maintain value compared to traditional equities, potentially misleading investors who equate low movement with risk aversion.

Gallegos’s perspective reflects a trend where financial institutions downplay risks to attract retail investors. By presenting alternative investments as empowering tools, the inherent complexities and risks are often overlooked. This cognitive dissonance can foster misplaced confidence in products misaligned with investors’ financial goals.

Critics like Todd Sohn caution against dismantling barriers to alternative investments, arguing that not all investors would benefit from easier access. Many may be better served by traditional investments with clearer performance metrics, as exotic opportunities often carry additional risks.

Ultimately, the focus should be on providing retail investors with clear, unbiased information. The conversation must extend beyond access to include the responsibilities that come with it. Empowering investors to make informed choices will lead to better outcomes in the evolving investment landscape.
